ANGUS
ROBERT BRADLEY Chartered Loss Adjuster &
Professional Engineer
Angus is a specialist loss adjuster with experience
in leading and solving large complex technical
engineering related claims. Angus is now Regional
Engineer for Miller International Dubai, having
previously been GAB Robins New Zealand’s
engineering team leader. Angus has settled some
of New Zealand’s largest energy losses
where quantum has exceeded NZD10 million.
Angus has worked in Australia, Borneo, Malaysia,
New Zealand, Singapore, South Pacific, Thailand
and USA. He has managed cause investigations
of engineering losses to enable matters of policy
coverage and subrogation to be decided, and
understands the balance between reinstating
damage and the potential associated consequential
losses, as well as strategic risk management.
His 12 years experience includes engineering
related material damage/machinery breakdown/business
interruption, liability and professional negligence
claims, but his real passion lies in adjusting
construction, erection and delay in start up
claims in the energy sector. For the past seven
years his main focus has been obtaining work
in the power generation and transmission sector,
infrastructure projects and petrochemical industries.
Angus also has a good working knowledge of most
primary and secondary industries. Career highlights
include:
• The main natural gas pipeline supplying
the East Coast of the North Island, New Zealand
was damaged during a 1:100 year flood. Direct
appointment to settle NZD2million+ claim.
(This subsequently expanded to include 5 more
flood damaged pipelines. Quantum has doubled
and the claim is ongoing).
• Lead specialist loss adjuster responsible
for the adjustment of a claim involving the
catastrophic failure of a General Electric
LM6000 gas turbine used in a cogeneration
plant. This involved travelling to Houston,
Texas to witness the dismantling of the turbine,
managing the cause investigation and negotiating
the salvage value on behalf of underwriters.
The machinery breakdown and business interruption
losses were settled for AUD8 million net of
the deductible and salvage. Insured and uninsured
losses totalled NZD10.2 million. Subrogation
is still being contemplated. (This was the
7th major claim involving an LM6000 GT).
• Technical engineering adjuster instructed
to review the appointed expert’s opinion
on the most likely cause of an explosion that
occurred during performance testing of a liquefied
natural gas plant in East Malaysia (Borneo)
The review included travelling to Borneo in
order to understand why the incident had occurred
and explaining to underwriters in plain English
what actually happened. Reinstatement costs
exceeded USD100 million.
• An attempt to quench a geothermal
well used to supply steam to a power plant
resulted in a well 'kick' creating an eruption
to the height of the workover rig. Abandonment
and re-drilling costs exceeded NZD15 million.
Instructed to review policy response for the
damage to the well production casing.
• During performance testing of a 354MW
co-generation plant the stage 17 high-pressure
compressor blades in a GT26 single shaft gas
turbine failed resulting in a catastrophic
failure. It was found that the design of stage
17 was defective. The main contractor incurred
liquidated damages of NZD16 million and submitted
a claim under the delay in start up policy,
which was repudiated. The contract works claim
for the cost of reinstating the resultant
damage to the gas turbine was settled for
NZD3.2million net of the NZD500,000 testing
and commissioning deductible.
• Several formal presentations to the
Australia New Zealand Institute of Insurance
and Finance, and the New Zealand Institute
of Insurance Brokers about the hazards, risks
and causes of major engineering losses.
• One of the two nominated adjusters
appointed to investigate Fonterra Co-Operative
Group's engineering and contract works claims.
Fonterra is the world's largest exporter of
dairy products and is responsible for a third
of the world international dairy trade.
